March 13, 2008: The most current calendar thread is at http://www.woodwindforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1238. Read all about it and the problems putting a calendar together!

January 4, 2008: The new release form (Adobe Acrobat PDF format) is now available. If you want to send me pics for my calendar or book projects, fill one out!

Summary

Here's the quick details:

You send me a picture of a woodwind (for the Woodwind Forum calendar) or a saxophone (for TheSax.info calendar or my book project) in an artistic style. I edit said picture and put it in the calendar/book.

  • You can send to thesaxinfo@gmail.com. I can handle up to 10mb attachments per e-mail.
  • If you wish to snail-mail me instead, send me an e-mail FIRST and we'll make arrangements.

You also MUST fill out and SIGN a release form (available at http://thesax.info/release.pdf -- e-mail me at thesaxinfo@gmail.com if you need a copy and can't download it). I don't mind if you scan it/take a picture of it for me and e-mail it or if you snail-mail it to me, but it needs your signature: Lulu.com, the publisher, *will not* publish without a release completed for each of the pics submitted.

Deadline for CALENDAR submissions will be September 1.

(e.g. The deadline to submit pics for the 2010 calendars is September 1, 2009.)

There is no current deadline for the book, because I don't know how long that will take. However, get them in as soon as you can!

QUICK DETAILS: The 2009 (and ongoing) Calendar Project

TWO DIFFERENT calendars. I don't want to confuse you, much :).

Here's the deal:

1. I will still be doing a saxophone calendar, like I've done every year since 2006 (see http://forum.saxontheweb.net/showthread.php?t=80154). This calendar is ~primarily~ a community service for folks that want me to publish really nice pics of their saxophones. It also raises a little cash for me and my other sax-related endeavors.

2. The Woodwind Forum calendar will be a complete fundraiser (see http://www.woodwindforum.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=580). Yes, artists will still have the option to get a share of the profits, but I won't get any. (The only funds I'm going to get are to pay for the cost of proofs.)

-> Yes, you can contribute pics to both calendars or either. <-

QUICK DETAILS: The Book Project

I've mentioned, in a few places, that I will be doing a book project. I will start compiling this in earnest after I complete college in August 2009 (long story; it's been 21 years since my first college course). The image requirements will be essentially the same as for the calendar, so I'm not creating a separate section about that.

The book project will be feature a bunch of pictures from the past and current calendars, some new pics and my pithy commentary, new articles and updated versions of some of my previously published articles. This will be all put together in a hardbound book and published through probably a different company than Lulu.com (to keep the overall cost down).

Overly Enthusiastic Detail, to Try to Answer Every Question

Picture Requirements

As big as you can take. Lulu, the publisher, wants at least 2625 x 3375 pixels at 300 dpi and preferably 4125 x 5775 at 500ppi. For all submissions, including if you can't take pictures that big, please send me multiple EQUAL SIZED pictures and MULTIPLE POSES of your horn.

a. Use a light-colored or softly-bright (i.e., not "neon pink", but "satin") background. Dark colored backgrounds do not print well, so please don't use them. For an example of what I want, check ANY photo on http://www.vintagesax.com.

b. Again, please submit *multiple pictures* of your horn in different poses. Recommendations are:

  • Left side portrait of the horn.
  • Right side portrait of the horn.
  • Close-up of the engraving/stamps.
  • Close-up of lower half of instrument, featuring the keywork.
  • Close up of upper half of instrument, featuring the keywork.
  • Close-up of whatever feature you think is nicest/most interesting.

Please do not include people or copyrighted sheet music in your pictures. I have to reject those submissions.

c. There is no c.

d. I don't mind mixing makes and models for the calendar, nor do I mind mixing and matching VINTAGE or MODERN horns. Woodwind-related pictures (for instance, toys) may be considered for the calendars, too.

SHOW ME (well, you) THE MONEY

  • The profit on each calendar, regardless of size, is $4.
  • I do not have firm pricing info for the book, yet, so I can't tell you what the profit will be. I'd like it to be $4, as well.

  • Profits for the calendars will be split 33/66 -- just like in the past -- between the artists and Ed or me (depending on the calendar). That means the artist that wants a share of the profits will get about $0.21 per month included per calendar sold. Hard to get rich on this, but you get to say that you're a published photographer. There's A LOT to be said for that.
  • Profits for the books will be split 50/50 between the people that submit pics and me -- because I'm doing a lot more work on the book. The actual profit that will go to an artist is yet to be determined (it'll depend on how many pages are in the book).

  • People published in the calendar will have an opportunity to buy a calendar direct from me at a $4 discount -- details will be available to each artist included after the calendar is produced.
  • Because pricing for the book is not available, I can't tell you if there is a discount on that.

  • You get FULL credit for the pic and retain the right to use your pic someplace else. You also will have the opportunity to *put a caption on the calendar*, which can include a non-adult website or business address. Examples from my 2008 sax calendar are at http://www.thesax.info/2008%2Dcalendar/, to give you an idea -- heck, one guy even posted his PayPal account.
  • The books will have different captions. On the actual page displayed, the name of the person who submitted the pic will be displayed and I'll post some other data relevant to what I'm discussing. Full credit for the pic will be given in an appendix of the book.

  • According to http://www.lulu.com, royalty payments for the calendars are done QUARTERLY. I'll get the check and disburse to the artists generally at the end of February/beginning of March.
  • Again, no information on the books, yet.

Important Final Notes

  • All submissions may also be considered for future picture projects. You'd get profit from any of those, if you so wish and you're included. If that is unacceptable please note that on your release form or e-mail me.
  • I will not have a "stock" of calendars. Lulu publishes the calendars only after orders are placed.
  • While I'm a nice guy 'n' stuff, your order will be placed through Lulu and everything else will be handled thru Lulu. If you have any problem not related to a picture or the content of the calendar itself, you need to contact them.
  • I had a large order placed in 2008 and found out that there seems to be a 23% discount for orders over 26 calendars. That's about $4 per calendar for the large calendar. So buy lots and save!
  • If I sell a significantly higher amount of calendars than 2008 (I sold 183), I'll put an ad in The Saxophone Journal magazine. However, a small color ad is $700. A full page is $1384. So, it's something to work toward, but that would mean tripling my sales.

  • No information on the books, yet, but the publishers I'm looking at are also on-demand publishing. That means that I will not have "stock" and all orders will be handled through this publisher.

Small Banner

If anyone wants to promote the Calendar for me, I have a very small HTML that links to a small picture on this website. The "banner" can be downloaded at http://thesax.info/smallbanner.htm (and I don't mind if you make it smaller than the appx. 150 x 150 pixels).

What's in the 2010 Calendar

(This was last updated on November 15, 1009)

The HORNS included for the calendar, along with the months and picture credits are ...

  • Helen Kahlke, lacquer Selmer Mark VI Eb bari (& tenor, depending on the calendar), with Porsche 911: COVER.
  • Christoph Huxoll, Conn 28M, 26M and 26M Model VII.
  • AH Visser, lacquer Wurlitzer Lyric Eb alto (Martin Indiana stencil).
  • Bo Meyer, ca. 1866 bare brass Lecreusett & Quandieu straight Bb soprano.
  • Neil Sharpe & Garry Lamb, 1938 lacquer Buescher Aristocrat Bb tenor and misc. gigging stuff.
  • Matt Stohrer, ca. 1960 lacquer Selmer Mark VI Eb alto w/factory additional keywork.
  • Christoph Huxoll, 1924 silver plated Buescher True-Tone Bb bass.

Note that I had "HORNS" in all caps. There are sample pics for the calendar at http://stores.lulu.com/store.php?fStoreID=1358770 (FLASH REQUIRED) -- along with pictures of what the calendar part of the calendar looks like. The pictures you see are exactly what you get (yes, there's a white border. It's for the binding. It's not as apparent in the printed calendar).

Additionally, the poses in the "big" calendar (13.5" x 19") are different from the ones I used in the "small" (11" x 17") calendar. Why? Sometimes the poses used in the big calendar didn't look right in the small one and vice-versa. Let's just call it "artistic reasons" and leave it at that :).

  • The calendars are printed on heavy glossy stock. 2007's calendar was glossy for the small, linen for the big. The "linen" really reduced the detail, IMO, so I'm really glad that glossy's now available for the big one.
  • The calendars will be available for sale at http://stores.lulu.com/store.php?fStoreID=1358770
  • Prices are $28.49 for the big calendar and $17.49 for the small calendar. I will list any coupon codes I get at http://www.woodwindforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1963. I've had one for 50% off, already!
  • Remember that you will have to pay for shipping. Yes, Lulu ships internationally. Check out http://www.lulu.com/en/help/shipping_faq to make sure your order will arrive by Christmas.
  • All profits (which is appx. $4 per calendar) are split 66% to the artists and 33% to me.
  • The cheapest US postage is approximately $5.90. It takes "5 to 7 days" to get the calendar if you use the cheapest postage.
  • Remember that Lulu prints the calendar after you order it. That process takes 3 to 5 business days.
